If I Could Only Choose 3 Products for Winter

Winter has a way of making you feel like you need everything.

More moisturizer. More immune support. More energy. More patience. More layers. More coffee. (Always more coffee.)

And look, we’ve had a weirdly warm winter here in the Midwest. It’s February, and we’ve seen days in the 50s and 60s when we should be buried under snow. But don’t let that fool you – your skin still knows it’s winter. The air is still dry. The heat is still running indoors. Your hands still crack. Your face still feels tight. Unseasonable warmth doesn’t change the fact that winter is hard on bodies.

So if I had to simplify everything and keep just three things on hand for winter – knowing I couldn’t reach for anything else – it would be these. Without hesitation.

1. Vanilla Tallow

Winter is brutal on the skin barrier. And I don’t mean that in a gentle, poetic way. I mean, it literally strips your skin faster than your body can keep up.

Cold air outside. Dry heat inside. Wind that feels personal. Your skin doesn’t stand a chance.

Most lotions try to fix this by adding moisture back in, which works temporarily, but doesn’t actually address the problem. Your skin barrier is compromised, so it can’t hold onto anything you give it. You’re just refilling a leaky bucket.

Tallow works differently. It supports the barrier itself. It’s helping your skin hold onto moisture instead of constantly chasing it. It’s rich, deeply nourishing, and absorbent without feeling heavy or greasy. You don’t need much, and you don’t need to reapply constantly. We often say “a little goes a long way.“

We make ours with grass-fed beef tallow and vanilla (because winter is hard enough without smelling like a farm, for real). It’s the kind of product that quietly does its job without requiring you to think about it all day.

If I could only use one thing on my skin all winter, this would be it. Hands, face, elbows, feet – anywhere that feels tight, dry, or angry at the weather. It handles all of it.

2. Echinacea Tincture

Winter asks more of our immune systems. That’s just reality.

Cold and flu season. Kids are bringing home mystery viruses from school, the homeschool co op, and more. Less sunlight. More stress. Bodies working overtime just to stay warm and functional.

Echinacea is what we reach for when we feel run down or need extra support during long stretches of cold. It’s not a magic bullet. Nothing is. But it’s a steady ally when your body needs reinforcement.

We use it at the first sign of anything: scratchy throat, unusual tiredness, that vague sense of “I think I’m coming down with something.” Sometimes it heads things off. Sometimes it shortens the duration. Sometimes it makes the unbearable cold or flu somewhat bearable. Either way, it helps.

This is one that I keep an extra bottle in the cabinet and take it 2-3 times a day when I need it, then stop when I’m clearly on the other side. It’s not a daily supplement for us. It’s an as-needed tool for when winter is winning.

Something else I appreciate about echinacea? It’s been used for centuries. This isn’t trendy wellness nonsense, either. It’s a plant that has consistently shown up for people during cold seasons for generations. That kind of track record matters.

If you’re going to keep one immune-support herb on hand for winter, make it this one. Need versatility for the family? We make this one as a standard alcohol tincture, or you can try it in our new Glycerin Elixir, which is more palatable for kids and acts as a viable alternative for anyone wishing to avoid alcohol for any reason. You can read more about the differences here.

3. Lemon Balm Tincture

Here’s what nobody warns you about winter: it’s not just hard on your skin and immune system. It’s hard on your head.

The days are short. The routines feel heavy. You’re tired but wired. Low energy, but can’t sleep well. Doing all the things but feeling like you’re barely keeping up.

Winter is demanding – and not in a way that more sleep or better habits can always fix. Sometimes you just need something that gently takes the edge off.

We make a few things to help in this area. But Lemon balm is what works for me.

It’s calming without making you drowsy. It supports mood without feeling like a forced shift. It helps with emotional heaviness, nervous tension, and that specific brand of exhaustion that comes from managing too much for too long.

I take it during the day when everything feels like too much. When patience is thin, and I’m holding it together but just barely. When I’m tired, but my nervous system won’t let me rest.

It’s grounding, uplifting, and gentle enough to use consistently without worrying about dependency or side effects. It just… helps. Quietly. The way good support should.

Winter isn’t just about surviving the weather. It’s about managing the mental and emotional load that comes with shorter days, longer to-do lists, and bodies that are working harder just to function normally.

Lemon balm is one of my favorite herbs for daily winter support because it addresses the part of winter that nobody really talks about. The part that wears you down from the inside.

Remember: Winter Doesn’t Need Excess

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the things you should be doing to stay healthy this winter, start here.

Support your skin barrier so it can actually do its job.
Support your immune system when it’s working overtime.
Support your nervous system so you can handle the season without burning out.

That’s it. That’s the foundation.

You don’t need ten steps. You don’t need a complicated routine. You don’t need to overhaul your life.

You just need a few reliable things used with intention.

Winter is hard enough. Keep it simple.
